Overview

National Service Scheme (NSS) is a widely recognized and influential youth-centric program in colleges across the country. NSS was established in 1969, the year Mahatma Gandhi celebrated his birth, with the primary goal of fostering the character and personality of student youth via volunteer community service.

National Service Scheme was commissioned by SRM Institute of Science and Technology, Delhi-NCR in 2018. The activities of NSS mainly focus on Community Development Services, Social Services, Environmental Awareness Programs, Health Awareness. The NSS at SRMIST Delhi-NCR has guidelines to conduct various Regular and Special Camping activities.

This cell is chaired by Dr Nirmal Sharma, Associate Professor in the department of English and Foreign Languages from the beginning till now with the vision of developing among students a sense of social and civic responsibility. NSS Cell at SRMIST, Delhi-NCR motivates students to utilize their knowledge in finding practical solutions to individual and community problems and developing competence required for group-living and sharing of responsibilities.

Overall, the diverse range of regular activities undertaken by NSS volunteers demonstrates their unwavering commitment to serving the community and making a positive impact on society, contributing to building a better world for all.

NSS volunteers work to provide help the needy people, visiting and providing service in old age homes, slum area and various NGOs, arrange blood donation camps and health check-up camps to fulfil the welfare of the society as a whole and therefore, the NSS volunteers shall strive for the well-being of the society.

Motto

The Motto of NSS “Not Me But You”, reflects the essence of democratic living and upholds the need for self-less service. NSS helps the student’s development & appreciation to other person’s point of view and also show consideration towards other living beings. The philosophy of the NSS is a good doctrine in this motto, which underlines on the belief that the welfare of an individual is ultimately dependent on the welfare of the society as a whole and therefore, the NSS volunteers shall strive for the well-being of the society.

Objectives of NSS

The NSS program in colleges operates with a set of well-defined objectives. These include:

  • Community Service: Encouraging students to actively engage in community service activities, addressing social issues such as education, healthcare, environmental conservation, rural development, and more.
  • Personality Development: Providing a platform for students to develop leadership skills, enhance interpersonal communication, and build a strong ethical foundation through various training programs and workshops.
  • Empathy and Social Awareness: Promoting a sense of empathy, compassion, and understanding towards the needs and challenges faced by marginalized sections of society, encouraging students to become responsible citizens.
  • Promote Solution-Based Approach: To utilize their knowledge in finding practical solution to individual and community problems.

Activities under NSS

NSS volunteers generally work in villages, slums and voluntary agencies to complete 120 hours of regular activities during an academic year. As per the fundamental principles of National Service Scheme, a volunteer is expected to remain in constant touch with the community. Hence, it is of vital importance that a particular village/slum is selected for implementation of NSS programmes. As the NSS volunteer is to live with the members of the community during the one-week Special Camping Programme and learn from their experience during his/her tenure.
